In capoeira, our most special events are batizados. A batizado is where a new student
gets his or her first cord, or belt, and where more advanced students get promoted. This is a really special time, rewarding months and sometimes years of hard work. Unlike other martial arts, in capoeira, one must not only learn the movements, but the music and instruments, and the culture and language as well.
September 13th, 2008, MMBAI, Inc. will be hosting its second annual Kids Batizado. MMBAI, Inc. has been working with kids in the Miami area for the past two years with programs in Kendall and Homestead. In Homestead, we work very closely and with the support of Sembrando Flores, a housing community for migrant farm workers and their families. These families are well below the poverty line and their kids grow up in poor schools surrounded by drugs, gangs, and violence. Our mission includes showing our students another way, a better path through life. We work with the kids to not only teach them music, culture, self-defense, and to provide a fun activity to keep them out of trouble, but also to help raise their grades and help mold them into productive citizens. We also work with middle class homes, often stuck in that all to common situation today of not having enough money but making too much to qualify for help. Kids in such families are just as likely to lose direction and we strive to help keep them on track.
This promotion ceremony and event is special because it brings kids together from many different capoeira schools and socioeconomic strata and lets the kids showcase what they have learned. It gives them a great sense of accomplishment and pride in themselves, as well as direction for their future accomplishments.
